What non-FA medical courses are accepted as an alternative to The FA medical courses?

There are different courses accepted for the different levels of FA medical courses.


The FA Level 1 Introduction to First Aid in Football (IFAiF)


The following courses are accepted at the point of recertification only (i.e. an FA medical course must have previously been completed) :

  • Hampden – National Sports First Aid course
  • World Rugby – First Aid in Rugby Level 1 course
  • RFU Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) Please note, the RFU EFARU training videos they are NOT a replacement for the face to face EFARU course.
  • Irish Rugby Union SAFE Level 1 course
  • Corobeus Sports Consultancy EFAiS course
  • Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support (BATLS)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 3 & requalification course (FREC Level 3)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 4 (FREC Level 4)
  • FREC Immediate Life Support [ILS] Level 4
  • St Johns Basic Sports First Aid 
  • The Red Cross First Aid for Sports Course 
  • Fitness First Aid – Level 3 award in First Aid for Sport (RQF) 
  • ITC Level 3 Award in First Aid for Sport, Exercise and Fitness ITC Certificate for Sport Exercise and Fitness at SCQF Level 6


The FA Level 2 Emergency First Aid in Football (EFAiF)

The following courses will be accepted at the point of recertification only (i.e. an FA medical course must have previously been completed):

  • Hampden  National Sports First Aid course
  • World Rugby First Aid in Rugby  Level 1 course
  • RFU Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) Please note, the RFU EFARU training videos they are NOT a replacement for the face to face EFARU course.
  • Irish Rugby Union SAFE Level 1 course
  • Corobeus Sports Consultancy Emergency First Aid in Sport course
  • Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support (BATLS)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 3 & requalification course (FREC level 3)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 4 (FREC level 4)



FA Level 3 Emergency Management of First Aid in Football (EMFAiF) 

The following will be accepted as an alternative course:

  • The RFU Pre Hospital Immediate Care in Sport (PHICIS) Level 2 course

The following courses will be accepted as an alternative course along with completing the online FA modules for Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Concussion

  • Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support (BATLS)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 3 & requalification course (FREC Level 3)
  • First Response Emergency Care Level 4 (FREC Level 4)
  • Paramedics with IHCD paramedic course; Paramedic foundation degree or MSc in Paramedical Science, registered with the HCPC who have proof of regular annual training and are currently practising on the road or in a training centre.


FA Level 4 Intermediate Trauma Medical Management in Football (ITMMiF) and FA Level 5 Advanced Trauma Medical Management in Football (ATMMiF)

As these courses are endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh sports trauma courses accredited at the relevant level, the following qualifications will be accepted as an alternative course:

  • Emergency Medical Management in Individual and Team Sports (EMMiITS)
  • RFL Immediate Medical Management on the Field of Play (IMMoFP)
  • RFU Pre Hospital Immediate Care in Sport (PHICIS)
  • Medical Cardiac & Pitch Side Skills (SCRUMCAPS)


In addition, at FA Level 4 ITMMiF the UEFA recognised Sports Promote course (http://sportpromote.co.uk) for football can be used. Note, this is an FA decision and may not be applicable across other RCSEd endorsed courses.
