What are the pre-requisites for applying for The UEFA A Licence?

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Have completed the UEFA B Licence 
  • Under the UEFA Coaching Convention 2020, Coaches must have held the qualification for at least one year prior to the course starting in January 2025. 


If you are currently enrolled onto another FA Level 4 qualification (Advanced Youth Award, UEFA A Goalkeeping, Leadership of Talent Identification & Development in Football) then your application will not be considered. This includes if you are currently in the assessment phase of the qualification.


For coaches, working in the Male Game, priority will be given to:


  1. Coaches who are currently working and living in England.
  2. Those currently coaching within the senior Professional Game in England as part of the Premier League & English Football League.
  3. Those who need the qualification in order to meet Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) regulations with those coaching with 11v11 given priority.
  4. Full-time staff to be considered before part-time staff working in EPPP. 
  5. Full-time coaches working in The National League and outside of the professional game from steps one to four will also be considered.


For coaches, working in the Female Game, priority will be given to:


  1. Those currently coaching within the senior Women’s Professional Game in England as part of a Barclays Women’s Super League or Women’s Championship team.
  2. Those that currently work within one of the Barclays WSL or WC professional game academies (PGA’s) and require the qualification as Academy Manager and/or Head of Coaching.
  3. Those that currently work within one of the Barclays WSL or WC professional game academies (PGA’s) at U21 level.
  4. Those currently coaching within the Women’s National League North and South (Tier 3) and outside of the women’s professional game.
  5. Those that currently work within one of the Barclays WSL or WC professional game academies (PGA’s) at U16 level.


As well as this, where possible coaches who have been identified in terms of future development will also be considered.


In order to apply for the course, please make you have the following documents ready to submit on the application. These documents must be in a pdf format and must be no larger than 2MB when uploading.

  1. An up-to-date Coaching CV (please ensure your date of birth, contact email and phone number is included).
  2. A letter of support or recommendation by a third party which supports your application for the UEFA A Licence. This letter or recommendation needs to be from either the Academy Manager, Head of Coaching, Manager or CEO at your club or a third party if you are currently between roles. Please note we do not accept letter of recommendations from the PFA or FA. We would like this individual to express why you would be a good candidate, how long they have known you, and in what context, and understanding of your motivation to achieve the UEFA A Licence.


Please be aware we will be contacting your Academy Manager or Head of Coaching to verify your role at the club and the details contained in your application.
